Visiting the Orphanage

Holly Friesen on February 5, 2010

God gave me the opportunity to have my heart blessed by a group of boys and by the Ukrainian church that has opened their hearts to minister to them! My co-workers Ted & Deb Welch have gotten involved with a ministry at an orphanage that is an outreach of their church. I was able to go with them on Thursday and thoroughly enjoyed the time I was able to spend with the kids. They have been told that most of these kids are juvenile delinquents and they rarely are allowed to leave the compound. In talking to them a couple of them did tell me that they had parents and siblings so I don’t know how many of them are truly “orphans”, but for whatever reason they are wards of the state. The church the Welch’s attend has a Bible lesson time with them each week & then some weeks they stay and visit with them during the free time that they have after supper. This week we had a group come with us from another church that had shoeboxes from Samaritan’s Purse to deliver. It was fun to watch the boys open their boxes and to see the other side of that ministry! That church group also participated in the lesson time and brought snacks for the boys. The art supplies in the boxes were the biggest hit! I was able to spend quite a bit of time visiting with the boys during the free time. That was the most I have tried to speak Russian all in one setting since I got here! Kids are so forgiving and love it when you try! They also had fun practicing the English words that they know on me and playing with my camera! They made sure that I had lots of pictures! I don’t know how often I will be able to go out there since right now learning Russian is my main priority but I hope to get out there occasionally to practice my Russian and share some of Christ’s love with these boys who seem hungry for someone to really care. What a blessing to see how the Lord has burdened this church & their leader Oleg for these boys. They are definitely having an impact!
