Adventures in Serving!

Holly Friesen on January 25, 2010

"So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom...And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands for us, Yes, establish the work of our hands." Psalm 90:12 & 17

I have been meditating on these verses recently and appreciate the reminder that nothing I do is going to be of any lasting value if it is not done in the power of God. I appreciate the many people who faithfully pray for me and send notes of encouragement. I am certainly blessed with a great team of supporters!

I wanted to share with you more about some of my activities the last couple of weeks. I have been able to help in some of the clinics before settling down to full time language study. It is definately a challenge for this "green" nurse practitioner to find her groove in caring for patients with a different culture and way of communicating and doing it through a translator. You can certainly pray that I will be able to communicate adequately and have wisdom in the decisions I make. I am definately glad that I always have Dr. Miriam there to back me up! I do enjoy it though! Many of my patients thank me for what we are doing and are very needy. This past Thursday we were in the village of Sahanskoye and I was able to do a number of home visits. These are often needed, but difficult for Dr. Miriam to do on a busy clinic day. I forgot to take my camera with me, but will be sure to take it next time! It was a snowy day and I got to experience using an outhouse in the winter for the first time! I am glad I don't have to do that all of the time! I will be helping with another clinic this week and then will be settling down to 5 days a week of language study and only helping with one clinic a month.

I have also enjoyed visiting different churches. I can't understand much but I have enjoyed the musical talent and the people are very friendly. There is usually someone who knows a bit of English that I can visit with. My second Sunday here I was able to share some special music in the church I visited. I sang "Amazing Grace" in English and then the congregation sang it in Russian. I had a great group of musicians accompanying me on the keyboard, guitar, and flute!

This past week I visited the church that Dr. Miriam attends and enjoyed having lunch with her pastor and his family. In the afternoon we went to one of the villages where the church has outreach and held a Bible study in one home and visited another. It was quite an interesting trip out there. There were places where the road was drifted so bad that we could not get through, so we drove off the road on the frozen fields most of the way! We did get stuck in a drift at one point and Pastor Lonya and I had to get out and push while Miriam drove us out of the drift! We wouldn't have made it without Miriam's 4-wheel drive!

I am sure there are many more adventures to come! I will keep you posted.....
Thanks for praying for me!
